Black diamond jewelry is in vogue these days and you might spot many celebrities like Olga Kurylenko,  Sarah Jessica Parker, Carmen Electra following the trend. But how are black diamonds different from white diamonds?

Black diamonds names as carbonados have incredibly rich history. These were discovered in 1840 and are found exclusively in Central African Republic and many parts of Brazil. Black diamonds are natural polycrystalline diamond that were formed 2.6 to 3.8 billion years ago and are found rarely. Till now, only 3 metric tons carbonado have been mined.

Black diamonds are believed to be formed by shifting of earth and folding of land masses. They were made when Africa and South America were a single land mass, which got struck by pre-solar meteorites. Carbonado are found in alluvial deposits of Brazil and Central African Republic. The largest black diamond Sergio was found in Brazil. It is of 3,167carat and is 60 times larger than the largest diamond.

Black diamonds are as hard as white diamonds but are believed to be younger than white diamonds. The prevailing theory says that carbonados were formed because of heat from natural radiation that was produced when the rocky asteroids or stars exploded. It is also said that black diamonds might have fell on earth even before an ancient block of the crust of the earth divided both: South America and Africa.

Diamonds have remained a symbol of power and strength since ages. Their beauty has also made them a symbol of romance, love and fashion. It is true that white and colorless diamonds are more expensive than black diamonds. But it does not mean that white diamonds are better than black. They are just different. The high quality black diamonds are bright, desirable, sparkling and even attractive. When used in a necklace, black diamonds can enhance the beauty of any elegant attire.
