Parents are increasingly opting for homeschooling their kids, instead of enrolling them in public schools. Here are 5 reasons why you should consider educating your children at home.
1. Academics
Although some parents are concerned that they are not qualified to teach their children, statistics show that home-schoolers outperform their peers in public schools on tests. Homeschooling provides personal attention that enables students to perform better. Children can set their own pace and learn according to their interests and learning styles. They are not forced to speed up the learning process because there is a test tomorrow or the other kids are ahead.
2. Socialization
Socialization is usually cited as a reason not to home-school. However, that home-schooled children receive less social exposure is not true. Unlike children in public schools who spend their days with others who share their age and financial background, home-schooled children interact with people of all ages. These children are regularly exposed to individuals of various backgrounds and ages in community activities, and they learn positive social behaviors from the adults around them.
3. Safety
Children who are taught at home grow up in a cooperative environment that is free from teasing, bullying and negative peer pressure. Instead of spending their energy learning to conformt, homeschooled children learn to appreciate their unique characteristics and share them with the world. These children are also less likely to develop harmful habits such as taking of drugs. Instead of being overprotected by parents, homeschool students leave home with the strong self concept they need to face life's challenges.
4. Freedom
Freedom and flexibility are the greatest advantages of homeschooling. When teaching their own children, parents have the freedom to decide their curriculum, according to what they would like to emphasize. They have more control over what their children are taught, and are able to introduce sensitive or controversial topics appropriately. Homeschooling families also get to spend more time together. This provides them with more freedom to plan field trips, vacations, etc.
5. Family
Family unity is one of the most important homeschool advantages. In addition to spending 6 hours per day away from home, public school students use their evenings to complete homework or learn for tests.Often, they are too busy with friends to have time for their parents and siblings. Homeschoolers can make use of the daytime hours, to both study as well as interact with family members.
