Different Learning Styles
Learning is a continual process. Long after we have graduated from school and college, our minds are excited by new discoveries and learning about new things as we go about our jobs and chores. A conversation, a ride on a bus, a magazine article can spark up those gray cells and have us thinking.
Ever wonder why different people have different ways of learning and grasping information? Say, two people listen to a certain song. One may remember the lyrics more easily, while the other may remember the tune better. Thus, there are different styles of learning, and most people usually fall under one of them, although some people possess two learning styles. Here are the basic types of learners/learning styles:
A Visual/Verbal learner usually learns best when details and information are presented visually. In a classroom, he learns better when the teacher uses the blackboard or provides notes and outlines. Or he tends to remember things that are written and are presented visually. He is good at spelling, signs and languages.
The Visual/Nonverbal learner learns best when the information is shown visually through images, pictures and designs. He relies on videos, charts, pictures, diagrams for information. Most visual/nonverbal learners are artistic and enjoy visual design and art.
The Tactile/Kinesthetic Learner learns best with physical or hands on activities. He is good at sports, loves moving around, and enthusiastically participates in physical activities. Laboratory settings and lessons that involve demonstrations are the best learning environment for this kind of learner.
The Auditory/Verbal Learner is at his peak in learning when information is conveyed orally to him/her. Lectures, group discussions, audio tapes are very beneficial for this type of learner. A person who is an auditory/ verbal learner remembers information best when it has been spoken to him. He remembers names better than faces.
Learning styles can be determined through a learning styles survey. While learning what your style is not life-changing, it can be very useful. By knowing your style you can find strategies that are particular to your learning style. This can speed up the learning process considerably. You can even find out your child's learning style and help him accordingly.
