I am myself a wine lover. Okay let us talk about my favorite Port wine. This sweet Portuguese fortified wine is from the Duoro Valley that is located in the northern regions of Portugal. The fact is that similar wines are available all over the planet but the true port is from Portugal. As far as the choice factor is concerned, let me tell you that there are loads of styles to choose from, so here is a little help navigating the aisle and in choosing a good port.
Tawny Port: the color of this elegant wine is usually red but is aged and mellows to this golden colored liquid and is geared up with a kind of nutty flavor from the wood casks. The age indicated 'in woods' refers to the span of years it spent in the cask, and you will be surprised to know that the time span may range anywhere from 10 years to more than 50 years as well.
Garrafeira is a more aged vintage style of Port. It is extremely popular as fas as the wine lovers are concerned. It is made from single harvest grapes that is geared up with a fine combination of both the maturation of years spent in wood as well as the further aging in large glass vessels that are given the name as demijohns.
At present you will be surprised to know the fact that there is but one company, Niepoort, that markets Garrafeiras. You will actually find this particular word “Garrafeira” on a lot of old Tawny labels, where the contents of the bottle are of exceptional age. But the company that makes it is Niepoort!
Ruby Port: This is the cheapest style, only aged 3-5 years in stainless steel. Perfect for celebrations, as it is affordable!
White Port, is made from white grapes and can be found in dry to very sweet, and is normally served in a cold state. This one is one of my favorites.
Vintage Port is not found at a regular level and that is why it represents only 2% of port production. As far as the popularity of this wine is concerned, it is said that it is the flagship of all Portuguese wine and above all it is made entirely from grapes from a declared vintage year of production. Truly elegant!
These wines are aged in their barrels for but a short time, and because of this factor, these wines are able to retain their ruby color and fresh fruity flavors. They are also very popular.
Late Bottle Vintage is a grape that was designated Vintage but was left in the barrel as the demand is not that much! That's why the name Late Bottle Vintage is given!
