We all are aware of the fact that, proper communication with youth is very important. However, none of us give due attention to factors like behavioral style, which affects youth's actions. To motivate them it is very crucial to understand their point of view. For instance, when teens communicate among their friends, we are unaware of the fact that they apply particular behavioral style for certain situations. These behavior style may or may not be the same under another situation.
To better understand this concept, let us take observe a teen who is a demanding ring leader with peers. Another teen may require constant attention from others. Then, there's the quiet teen, who get easily persuaded by their friends. And, there would be teen who would seem quite but not as interactive as others. He likes to observe other rather than interacting in group activities.
Generally, for any adult these four instances would seem simply the way the individual teen behaves. But, if we take a closer look at these behavioral pattern you would realize the teens are using tendencies of four classic behavioral styles. These styles are present in most individuals. Usually, a person would have a combinations of these behavioral styles, but usually one style dominates.
Let us discuss the behavioral pattern of the above mentioned teens:
Teen who was the ring leader and has a dominant behavioral style.
Dominance: Direct & Decisive
Such individuals are considered strong-minded who like challenges and get immediate results.
Teen who needs constant attention has a influencing behavioral style.
Influence: Optimistic & Outgoing
Such individuals likes participating in teams, share ideas and energize others.
Teen who wants to follow the lead of his/her friends is considered to have a steady behavioral style.
Steadiness: Sympathetic & Cooperative
Such individuals are believed to be helpful and perform in consistent and predictable manner.
Teens who aren't too friendly are believed to have a conscientious behavioral style.
Conscientiousness: Concerned & Correct
Such individuals like planning ahead and follow a systematic approach.
All these different behavioral styles are based on various psychological researches. Understanding young individual's behavioral styles is one of the powerful ways to effectively communicate and motivate them.
