Pros and cons of IPTV
For all those who are still wondering what it is, IPTV is moving images sent over IP. It covers a variety of systems.
IPTV is encoded in either MPEG2, MPEG4, H264, or propriety protocols in broadcast, multicast or point to point IP networks. It may or may not use IGMP.
It can be used for viewing normal television, VoD, special services, "hotel room services", adverts, remote windows, anything.
There are open systems and closed systems. Some of which employ signalling and control, others are totally passive.
From a customer point of view, IPTV enables them to create custom channels that feature the content they wish to view without the limitations of broadcast scheduling.
From an advertising point of view ,it serves as a way of targeted advertising based on detailed demographic information, which is attained when a user chooses to use an IPTV provider.
From a broadcasters point of view IPTV provides the opportunity to generate revenue from re-purposed legacy content.
The term IPTV was coined by, by Eli Noam in 1998. It refers to video programming (one way) delivered by Information Packet switching/Internet Protocol, regardless of source. The increased interactivity and addressability of IPTV enables us to carry out multi-casting, narrow-casting, VOD, etc.
IPTV is a promising media broadcasting method which is used more and more for end users for live and (VOD) Video On Demand broadcasts. Almost anybody can now become a media broadcaster/provider and integrate their information services with this technology.
IPTV has changed the definition of "video watching". It offers freedom from dependency on broadcasting and government controlled TV networks. It's what Internet in general did for information,. Anybody can access and play IPTV.
The problem that confront this technology is that it is still not very well-known and difficult to understand by those with no technical background. Another big issue is that the underlying protocols are often unstable.
