Comic book movies have been a part of the silver screen for decades. And comic book movies have graced the big screen since 1966, with the "Batman: the Movie", starring when Adam West and Burt Ward. Directors struggled a lot as to how adapt the graphic novels into a concrete product, and in this effort they have taken a number of different takes. For example, the earliest "Batman" movies used comical sound effects as well as a humorous edge to draw the line between make-believe and reality.

On the contrary, the movie "Superman" is a serious story, that has a lot of action, but completely lacks but humor. The modern adaptations of the books are done in advanced way and played with special effects and character development. For example, "Sin City" is a serious film, but has been narrated to the comics very well. It used black-and-white cinematography, with very little splashes of color in order to give accent. At the same time, in "X-Men" we can see a very in-depth portrayal of characters, with the past, present and future psyches of all its complex anti-heroes.

The comic books DC has gained much success in the big screen throughout the 1980s and 1990s, along with "Superman II, III, and IV," "Swamp Thing," "Batman," "Batman Returns," "Batman Forever," and "Batman and Robin", which were released by Warner Brothers. The 1989 Batman movie, directed by Tim Burton that starred Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the Joker, was the second-highest grossing comic book movie ever until "The Dark Knight" was released in the year 2008 and knocked former down a notch.

The sequel "Batman Returns," proves to be the third-highest grossing film of 1992, starring Keaton as Batman. According to writer/director Kevin Smith the year 1992 as "the summer of the bat," since Batman merchandise filled every store and sold with amazing efficiency.

In the 1990s, DC Comics dominated the comic book movies world with their "Batman" series, "Spider-Man". Then, comes Christopher Nolan's "Batman: The Dark Knight" in 2008, that earning $522,106,180 at the box office and reclaimed the winning spot for the caped crusader, Sam Raimi's "Spiderman" trilogy was considered #1 with $403,706,375, $373,585,825 and $336,530,303, respectively, when it comes to comic book movies.

The three Spiderman films that set day records in the US, were the top three Marvel Comic movies ever made and were the most successful films ever produced by Sony/Columbia. Stan Lee was associated with the scripting and filming of these movies, only to ensure success. Marvel's "Iron Man," that starred Robert Downey Jr. was the fifth most successful comic book box office hit, bringing in $318,223,785.
