The price of gasoline is tend to go only upward and this has been a major problem for every motorist. However, the professionals at the nonprofit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) say that by changing a few driving habits and keeping up with regular vehicle maintenance can help the motorists to save a lot of their money.

Here are few suggestions provided by the professionals.
  • Avoid driving at higher speed: Speeding is one of the reasons that can cause decrease your miles per gallon by 15 percent or more. Sudden acceleration of your car also guzzle gas. Therefore, try to anticipate traffic ahead and accordingly adjust your speed gradually. If possible use cruise control.
  • Use windows and air conditioning wisely: You can improve mileage of your car, if you keep its windows closed at highway speeds. Also avoid excessive use of the air conditioner and stop-and-go driving.
  • Be organized: Try to be organized and always combine your daily trips if possible! Also try to travel during off-peak times to avoid heavy traffic.
  • Keep the trunk clean: Remove the unnecessary loads from your car. It can help cut down on weight and less weight means better mileage.
  • Check your tires: Keep the car tires always inflated properly. Because, under-inflated tires or poorly aligned wheels can cause waste fuel by forcing the engine to work harder.
  • Follow the owner's manual: Always follow the service schedules listed in your owner's manual. Replace filters and fluids as recommended there. Make sure you take your vehicle to a repair facility to correct any engine performance problem, such as rough idling and poor acceleration.
  • Keep your engine tuned: Keep checking the engine on a regular basis. Because, a failed oxygen sensor or misfiring spark plug can reduce gas mileage.
