In today's materialistic world, we all have gotten used to the conveniences of modern life. We are judged on the basis of what hi-tech gadgets we have and the kind of cars we drive. Our wants and wishes are endless. Even the concept of self-esteem has been turned around in the past few years.

In today's materialistic world, we all have gotten used to the conveniences of modern life. We are judged on the basis of what hi-tech gadgets we have and the kind of cars we drive. Our wants and wishes are endless. Even the concept of self-esteem has been turned around in the past few years. In such a scenario, finding the balance between our desires and our spiritual needs is a constant struggle.

Looking inward is the first step towards a fuller awareness of your spirituality. Your spiritual self can be accessed through meditation or using a journal. One should not just focus on memories of things that occur from day to day or from the past. Looking inward means to look at how you feel, what your beliefs are and what truly motivates you. You can gain valuable insight into your spirituality when you look at your experiences, how you connect to others, and the decisions you make in your life. There are good things you know about yourself and these are the things you keep and which help you grow stronger. The not so good parts are the ones you want to let go. This would require a lot of courage. A willingness to face the truth about yourself is a start. The next step is to focus on what needs improvement and how you can do that.

When we talk about spirituality, religion will usually come into play. Knowing your motives and how you conduct yourself is the theme in most religions. Physical needs are secondary to spiritual needs. Growth of spirituality is directed by your morals, beliefs, experiences and how you help others on your journey in this world. Spiritual development is the road to knowing your higher power, or God.

Perhaps you believe we come into the world already programmed with the meaning of life. Perhaps the meaning of life and the growth of your spiritual self depends on the course of action you choose for yourself. Either way, spiritual growth brings the realization that you do not just exist. How you connect with other people and your actions in each situation contributes to the growth and knowledge of your inner life. As you learn more about how this works, you will begin to reject some long held beliefs and acknowledge the truth of others. There is a purpose to your life which getting in touch with your spiritual self would bring out.

Modern life makes it a little more difficult to see how we are all connected. When the realization comes to you, it humbles you. You will appreciate everything in your life more. You can step out of your comfort zone when it comes to interacting with other people. Spiritual growth is an ongoing process. While it sometimes brings disappointment, spiritual development can be a constant source of joy.
