For most parents lying kids is one of the perpetual problems. Parents usually assume this behavior as a sign that their children lack respect for them. It is important that parents understand the importance of all behavior of their kids is purposeful, even the habit of lying. They need to identify the purpose underlying their children's need to distort the truth. You'll be surprised to know that when kids lie it is a natural brain activity. Some of the common reasons when kids lie are:
  • To escape punishment
  • For a good impression
  • To avoid someones feelings
Instead of confronting children about lying pattern as it can make the matter worse. This step may unintentionally promote such behavior in their children to become more deceptive about their behavior. These are some of the basic guidelines for parents to cope with lying kids:
  1. It may be possible that kids are lying to get the attention of their parents.
  2. Every child would lie at some point or the other. It is natural.
  3. Instead of using the word lying but soften the conflict that means the same.
  4. Acknowledge different feeling of children even lying as they may be embarrassed or sensitive towards certain situations.
  5. Reinforce the positive behavior whenever children tell the truth.
  6. Never set-up your child by being aware of a lie and then asking them about the truth.
  7. Always try to acknowledge the untruthful deceptions and set reasons and logical consequences.
  8. Make sure to talk honestly with your children as you're their role models.
It is the responsibility of parents, teachers and the whole community to teach children the evils of lying. Although, most of us are trying to undo a behavior that just comes naturally to children. You need to understand at times kids get confused between a lie and a fib. Remember that only healthy involvement with children can help you minimize lying behavior among them.
