The full form of the abbreviated term IPS stands at Intrusion Prevention System.  Intrusion essentially means spotting loopholes in the entire network and taking an advantage of the same. One can say that intrusion is an inappropriate, incorrect or anomalous activity that is taking place on host-based or network-based systems. One can perform malicious activities, such as denial of service attacks, port-scans and  crack into computer by monitoring network traffic. The various forms are as follows:
  • Worms
  • Trojans
  • Spyware
  • Keyloggers
  • Other Malware attacks.
Intruders basically seek old as well as newly discovered vulnerabilities in the operating systems, network services or protocols and try taking advantage of the same.

Who are these Intruders?

They are generally someone from outside who are trying to gain information. There have also been cases when a disgruntled employee on the inside is attempting to cause a havoc. One can say that the purpose of an intrusion prevention system on a computer security device is to monitor the network as well as the system activities for malicious or unwanted behavior. Moreover, the IPS also reacts in real-time to block or prevent the same activities.

The IPS system acts as a security management system that goes about gathering and analyzing information. Moreover, it also identifies the possible security breaches. These security breaches attacks can be either from outside the organization or even from within the organization. IPS can help substantially in not only preventing, but also detecting an attack.
